This email to all staff will explain details of the day
The Tuesday of Education Week (04/08/20) is National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The theme is: We are the Elders of tomorrow, hear our voice.
Your grade CAPA representative has already explained that you will be using that day to complete an Aboriginal artwork reflecting the theme of Drought & Bush fire.
During the day, your class will also go to the Aboriginal Garden to listen to a talk by ??. As stated by ??, to accommodate all classes, the schedule is quite tight so, please make sure you’re on time. The timetable has been attached to this email. Please let me know if there are any issues with the times allocated.
In the staff room, there will be a resource table set up tomorrow with activities you could do with your class on that day. These activities are completely optional. If there is something you’d like, please make a copy and leave the original document there for others to use.
A big thanks to the ?? and the Aboriginal Committee for all of their work and organisation for Education Week and ?? for giving us the opportunity and resources to celebrate ‘Learning Together’.
Looking forward to seeing the beautiful artworks, when they are displayed in the hall.

We will celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander this day with children sitting around an outdoor fire.
We will start with our Acknowledgement of the Boonwurrung people of the Kulin Nation, in this they thank Bunjil and Waa the crow for looking after them, the land and the waterways. The children will be wearing jogolga they have made, these necklaces have significance and connection to Victorian Aboriginal culture. As we we tell stories that are connected to Victorian Aboriginal lands and language as we believe when we tell stories of local culture, we begin to help ourselves and children understand the history and culture of where we live work and play and important connections to country are made.
On the fire we will cook our damper and whilst we wait, sing songs, including Head Shoulders Knees and toes in language of Daly RIver, NT, taught to us by our friends from Miriam Rose Foundation when they visited us last year at our kindergarten.
The children will watch us proudly placing hand knitted black, yellow, and red bands high up in our gum tree to signify we welcome Aboriginal and Torres Strait families, and children to our service. The children are looking forward to this day very much, as are the adults.

Many thanks for your note with the posters that you dropped off at school for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. I have put the posters up at school in the entrance corridor and staffroom. I spoke with our before and after school care coordinator and music teacher Jack, and passed a poster across to them as well. They will include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day in their activities next week. At the beginning of the week I emailed all staff and asked whether they could include an activity/lesson in their online learning next week for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The Juniors are beginning next week with a discussion and research regarding the basic rights of every child to be safe, healthy, treated fairly, play and learn. We began making slapsticks in our classroom during our time back at school after RL 1.0 and hope to be able to continue this over the next few weeks online. I will document Unit NF’s work and upload images to our virtual gallery on Twitter.
