We will be celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s day by having local Wiradjuri artist David Dunn visit and conduct art workshops across the week with our children.


Awabakal Baby Welcoming Ceremony

This event will be held on the 1st of August 2019 from 10am-1pm at Newcastle City Hall, King Street Newcastle.

80 of their beauiful babies will be welcomed to community and presented to Elders. This is their fifth anniversary and will be lead by the Awabakal family health team at the AMS. This is a major event on the Newcastle Indigenous calendar and they are expecting a record number of guests and plenty of media attention.

Also in line with the theme this year they will be including their playgroup, pre-school and primary children in the days activities to show the journey of our families with our Awabakal community.

More importantly they get to celebrate the birth of their future generations and give them all a beautiful start to life with a blessing and acknowledgment from Elders and community. A sense of belonging they hope will carry them through their journey in life.

Sports Day – Mini Olympics for children under the age of 6 years. Preschool, kindergarten and playgroup children from the Nambucca Valley gather for four hours of field events: running races, sack races, egg and spoon races and many group games including the all time favorite Uncle Ritchie’s obstacle course. Uncle Ritchie Donovan facilitates the day.

Families are welcome to join in the fun. Bring a picnic.

In partnership with Red Cross, a morning tea for the local community and families at Little Yuin. 

Activities include: Face painting, building a NAIDOC family tree, group time – children sing cultural songs together; painting on canvas using natural colours and collected fallen sticks to frame the children’s artwork. The local newspaper will be invited. 

On Wednesday 7 August, local Yr 6 students from a school visit to read stories and play games with the children.
